Our story

Many years ago, pregnant with my first born SHEA, I was shocked by the price of maternity clothes: $42 for a pair of unattractive jeans, or $28 for a top that fit like a tent!  An avid thrift shopper, I immediately sought out second hand maternity clothing stores. When I couldn’t find one—I mean not even one—the idea was born. LOVELY BUMP actually started out as MOMMY2BE in the garage of my San Bruno home! My friend Barbara and I hosted weekend swaps, where families could come and get rid of stuff, or new moms could buy clothes right there from our cash box. I was teaching 2nd grade Monday-Friday but discovering a new passion Saturday and Sunday. When a few of our regular weekend customers (thanks Margaret!) as well as my neighbor Edwina suggested we open a real store, I took it to heart. When Barbara opted out, I faced it alone: borrowed some money from my home, and signed a lease in downtown San Bruno.

That was November of 2005. My 2nd child FINN, was about 6 months old.  One night I whispered in Finn's ear: ‘my lovely bump’--an endearing nickname that’s been used in my family for generations. Right then, a light bulb turned on; but was the domain already taken? I checked the computer right away, and yes, lovelybump.com was available! The business had a new name. The space (which would house starbucks next-door) was being renovovated at the time and was down to the studs. Since I would contract out much of the work myself, I had some say over design. I rallied to keep the antique windows & high ceilings exposed in the shop, chose the tile & wainscoting for the bathroom, light fixtures, paint colors, and even painted the murals myself. LOVELY BUMP officially opened for business on Mother's Day, 2006 at 509 San Mateo Avenue in downtown San Bruno.

Today what sets apart from other similar stores are ideals that have been around since the beginning: A very boutique-y feel where craftspeople and artists can sell their wares on consignment (think etsy in storefront). We are told repeatedly that we are the most CLEAN and ORGANIZED consignment store around. Babies love to look at the 25 foot ceilings with the bubble-like light fixtures. Moms love the wide open space to push stroller around and take the time needed to find treasures, visit with our 25 year old turtle LARRY, or just watch their children play. Yes, we are a very user-friendly store. So come to shop, to trade, for a visit, or to promote one of our local mom projects with ongoing events in and out of the shop in areas like: belly plastering, henna tattoo, skincare, and yoga. Look forward to meeting you at the Bump soon :)
